Nell Flanders

Violinist Nell Flanders has enjoyed a varied career as a performer and teacher, both in the US and abroad.  An avid and versatile chamber musician, she has performed with ensembles including the University of Chicago Piano Trio, Pocket Opera Players, Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues, and Tango Bohemia, covering a range of styles from classical to blues, tango, baroque, and contemporary music.  As an orchestral violinist Ms. Flanders has performed with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, Chicago Opera Theater, Academia Ars Musicae, the Akron Symphony, the Canton Symphony, and the Chicago Civic Orchestra, among others.

A founding member of the period instrument ensembles Urban Baroque and Baroque Band, Ms. Flanders performed for many years with Chicago Opera Theater, including a critically acclaimed performance of Monteverdi’s Orfeo with Jane Glover at BAM.  Other recent collaborations include an all Beethoven program with the Providence-based chamber ensemble Musica Maris, and performances with Siren Baroque.

Ms. Flanders has taught violin and chamber music at Utah State University, the University of Chicago, and Vandercook College of Music.  She is currently on the faculty of the Hoff-Barthelson Music School in Scarsdale, NY and teaches privately in New York.  She holds a Bachelor degree from the Oberlin Conservatory and a Masters degree from the University of Akron and has studied at the Longy and Amherst early music institutes.  Fluent in 5 languages, Ms. Flanders also enjoys rock climbing and tango dancing.
