Edmundo Ramirez

Edmundo Ramirez (viola & viola d’amore) performs in major concert halls around the world including the Alice Tully Hall, Bellas Artes in México, the Konzerthaus in Vienna and Berlin, Carnegie Hall, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. As a chamber musician and soloist, his performance collaborations include the Absolute Ensemble, the Fine Arts Quartet, the Ensemble Intercontemporaine, the Bremen Kammerphilarmonie, the Menninger Hofkapelle Orchestra, Jupiter Symphony and Rebel Baroque Orchestra. Edmundo has collaborated in projects with noted artists Pierre Boulez, Goran Bregovich, Kent Nagano, Mikhail Muntyan, Saleem Adbud-Askar, Paquito de Rivera, Pablo Ziegler and Joe Zawinul among others.  Mainly a violist, he is proficient on several instruments including violin, viola, baroque violin and viola and viola d’amore.

While teaching in Mexico he founded and conducted the Baroque String Orchestra “Veracruz Chanterelle” and researched on the relations of some of Mexico’s Folkloric and Baroque Music tradition and their relationship to the Baroque Music of Europe.

Edmundo studied in his native Costa Rica and later at the New England Conservatory, The Juilliard School and the Academia Chigiana in Italy. His teachers include Yuri Bashmet, Heidi Castleman, Walter Trampler on the viola, Ida Haendel and Rafael Druian on the violin and Cynthia Roberts and Nancy Wilson on the Baroque violin. Recordings include the Sony, Enya and Arco labels.
