L’incomparable Monsieur de Lully
Marc Destrubé leads the Dorian Baroque Orchestra in a concert of French baroque music.

Jean-Baptiste Lully came from humble beginnings in Italy only to rise as the favorite composer of King Louis XIV in France.  Lully’s attunement to the French cultural spirit brought a great advancement in music, full of regal and archaic themes and driven by the rhythms of dance. Music by Lully, Couperin, Muffat, Marais, and Rebel.

La Calisto
At the Manhattan School of Music’s Summer Voice Festival

With music by Francesco Cavalli and libretto by Giovanni Faustini, the opera La Calisto is based on the myth Callisto from Ovid’s Metamorphoses.  First performed in 1650 at the Teatro San Apollinare in Venice, Italy, La Calisto tells the tale of mischievous deities playing with the hearts of mortals.  In this tale of betrayal, seduction, and revenge, no one is immune to the power of attraction, no matter what they claim.
